Match 6 Result: Islamabad United Claim their first victory in PSL after defeating Karachi Kings
Islamabad United grab their first victory of the PSL in a nail biter against the Karachi Kings with the match going to the wire.
The sixth T20 match of the tournament was played on Sunday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Shoaib Malik’s Karachi Kings won the toss and elected to field based on how the pitches have helped the side bowling first.
Much to the surprise of everyone, the pitch did not offer a lot for the bowlers and the Islamabad United batsmen looked comfortable in their stroke play. The sensible start came to test as soon as spin was introduced, Imad Wasim struck on his first ball, an Arm-ball skidding off the surface and in to hit the back pad. IPL’s new millionaire, Watson trapped in front and yet again struggling to make a mark in the PSL. Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Lateef however took responsibility and built a set platform for United. With 70 runs on the board in 11 overs and 9 wickets to spare, United looked set to cross the 150 work but a dramatic collapse followed starting from Sharjeel’s wicket on Amir’s delivery which was not a threatening one. A couple of overs later, Ashar Zaidi strayed from the crease at the non strikers end and paid the price as Bopara produced a good throw to catch him short.
Misbah sent Russell in to keep the runs flowing but it was to no avail, Usama Mir dismissing the dangerous Russell. The collapse continued in the next over, Bopara got the wicket of the set, Khalid Lateef and just a couple of deliveries later Billings had to go back to the pavilion, run out while trying to get a speedy single. Misbah tried to provide some stability but failed to do anything impactful, falling in the 18th over. It was Mohammad Sami, whose innings helped United go past 130.
With a low score on the board, Islamabad United needed an inspired performance with the ball to get the win, and it indeed started well for them as Simmons got himself run out after some great work by Zaidi in the field. Next, Saeed Ajmal struck gold on his very first delivery removing Vince with a splendid delivery as Karachi Kings stood troubled at 3-2! Wickets kept falling, Imad Wasim falling prey to Russell, edging the ball to Sam Billings.
The all inspired Islamabad United team struck gold yet again as Shoaib Malik departed leaving the Kings in all kinds of trouble. Rumman Raees lost his wicket after a somewhat struggling innings. Shakib, however looked dangerous as the match progressed but Saeed Ajmal’s over turned things in United’s favor as he dismissed Shakib and Saifullah Bangash in the 15 th over. Ravi Bopara put up a strong fight and had it almost won for the Karachi Kings, needing 3 to draw on the last delivery but managed to score only a single on the lost ball and thus resulted in being short of the target by just 2 runs.
Wasim Akram and Dean Jones were extremely relieved to edge out a victory at last in the PSL. The Man of the Match went to Saeed Ajmal for his match changing spell.
